New Recalls Hit Ram ProMaster Vans, VW ID.4s and Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids
If you drive a Ram ProMaster for work, charge a Volkswagen ID.4 in your garage, or just picked up a new Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid, it is worth checking your VIN this week. Three safety recalls filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) between September 29 and October 7, 2026, cover about 319,000 vehicles combined, and all three models are common sights on DuPage County roads.
Ram ProMaster: power steering assist can cut out
The largest of the three covers 265,512 vans. Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Ram ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 vans, plus 2024-2026 Ram ProMaster 3500 electric vans. According to the recall filing, water may get into the electric power steering wiring harness and disable power steering assist, which NHTSA says can increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect and replace the wiring harness and power steering gear as needed, free of charge. A final fix is still coming: interim letters are expected to go out November 17, 2026, with more letters once the remedy is ready. Chrysler’s recall number is 92D.
Volkswagen ID.4: battery fire risk
Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4 SUVs from the 2023-2026 model years because the high voltage battery may fail and lead to a fire. The remedy is still under development. Until the repair is done, Volkswagen advises owners to charge to no more than 80% battery capacity. Interim letters are expected to be mailed November 27, 2026. VW’s recall number is 93EX.
Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid: loss of power at speed
Toyota is recalling 30,978 model year 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids. The filing says the motor generator control unit may hit an error that causes the hybrid system to reduce power or shut down at higher speeds. That is a real concern on I-88 or I-355, where a sudden loss of drive power means trying to get out of fast traffic. Dealers will update the software free of charge, and owner letters are expected starting November 22, 2026. Toyota’s recall number is 26TA22.
What this means for you
Recall letters for these three campaigns will not arrive until mid-to-late November, so the fastest way to know where you stand is to look it up yourself:
- Check your VIN. NHTSA’s free lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows any open safety recall on your vehicle. NHTSA recommends checking twice a year.
- Follow the interim advice. If you own an affected ID.4, the 80% charging limit is the manufacturer’s safety guidance until the fix exists.
- Recall repairs go to the dealer. NHTSA notes that recall remedies are done at no cost by the automaker’s dealers. A body shop can’t perform them for you.
- Fleet owners, check every van. If your business runs ProMasters, look up each VIN, not just one.
Where we come in is the other side of the equation. If a steering or power problem ever does lead to a scrape, a bumper hit or a crumpled fender, that body damage is a separate repair from the recall work. Our team at EZ Tech Paintless Dent Removal & Collision can look at it and explain your options, from paintless dent repair for smaller dents to full collision repair.
